What does ‘motor legal expenses’ mean?

Motor legal expenses, sometimes referred to as ‘MLE’, is often sold as an add on or optional extra with your car insurance policy. Essentially, it’ll cover you for any legal expenses relating to an incident you’ve on the road or relating to your car.
What will motor legal expenses (MLE) cover me for?
Allianz provides motor legal expenses cover for up to £100,000 to claim for uninsured losses in the event of an accident that is not your fault. Alternatively you can claim legal expenses of up to £100,000 to defend a motoring prosecution.
It’s important to remember, this will only be valid if there’s deemed to be more than a 51% chance of success in the legal battle. Our free legal helpline will advise you on this.
Here are some examples of uninsured losses:
- Medical costs for you and any passengers in your car at the time of the incident.
- Reasonable travel expenses (things like your commute to work if you’d have normally driven).
- The cost of a hire car so you can still get around if yours is being repaired or replaced.
- Loss of earnings following the incident – perhaps you’re unable to work due to injury.
- The cost of chargeable phone calls to your insurer and solicitor.
- All court and solicitor fees incurred during the claim.

What's not covered by motor legal expenses (MLE)?
- It won’t cover you for any costs or expenses if you’re to blame for the incident.
- It won’t pay for any fines you incur for the motoring offence in question
- It won’t cover you if there’s less than a 51% chance of success

How do I claim for motor legal expenses (MLE)?
Following an incident, it’s important to contact your insurer as soon as possible (once everyone is safe). We’ll then get in touch with our panel of legal experts on your behalf. You can also opt to appoint your own solicitor, proving they’re happy with our standard scale of charges.
