How to look after your car windscreen

In the winter months, it's important to give your car some extra care. Driving with limited vision is extremely dangerous for both you and other drivers on the road. Correctly de-icing your windscreen will help prevent road accidents and avoid costly repairs.

Although it's cold, resist the urge to pour boiling water from the kettle on ice to clear your windshield. This isn’t a good idea, the rapid temperature change could crack the glass and damage the windscreen. Avoid using anything with sharp edges like metal scrapers or a credit card to remove the ice, as these could scratch or damage the glass.

Instead, choose to use a soft edged scraper or spray on de-icer. Leave the de-icer on for a few seconds to let the chemicals get to work, then clear the melting ice with the scraper or a brush.

Your wipers help keep your windscreen clear when driving, so it’s important they’re kept in good condition. Avoid damage by following these steps:

  • Regularly check the condition of your wipers - the rubber should be soft and flexible.
  • Clean your wipers with warm water and mild soap.
  • Clear away any bits of plants, pebbles or debris trapped under the blades.
  • Lift your wiper blades ahead of a cold morning - cold weather can crack the rubber if it’s frozen to the windscreen.

If your windscreen wipers smear when you turn them on, it’s usually a sign of damage and you should consider replacing them as soon as possible.

A chipped or cracked windscreen can be tempting to ignore but leaving it could lead to much bigger problems in the future if you don't sort it out quickly.

Not only is driving with this likely to end up causing more damage, but it could be an offence under the Road Traffic Act. Large scratches or chips (anything over 40mm in size - or 10mm if it's in the driver's direct line of vision) could also mean your car fails its next Ministry of Transport test (MOT)

Check your windscreen both inside and out when you clean your car. If you spot a chip, time is of the essence, so get it repaired immediately. Fixing a chip or crack is a lot less time, money and environmental impact than replacing a whole windscreen.

Getting a chip repaired is straightforward, they can be completed within 25 minutes, and it can even be done at your home address. A windscreen replacement on the other hand could take up to three hours and cost a lot more.

To save yourself time and money, take action and book a repair appointment as soon as you can.

If you do have a chip, our car insurance has you covered. You don't need to contact us if you need to make a window or windscreen claim. You can get in touch with our recommended windscreen repairers directly.

Repairing a chip in a windscreen is not only cost-effective and time-saving but also environmentally friendly, as it reduces glass waste and avoids the need for international shipping - it’s a win for everyone.
