We know it sounds annoying, but really, just stay calm – it happens a lot and help will be on the way shortly. Here’s a little checklist to help keep you, and everyone else on the road, safe:

• Turn your hazard lights on
• Make sure you’re safely off the road
• Exit the car through the left-hand door
• Wear a hi-vis if you have one in the car
• Walk your warning triangle about 60 paces behind your vehicle (unless you’re on the motorway, in which case stand well away from the road at all times)
• If it’s dark outside or visibility’s poor, keep your sidelights switched on
• Only after all this should you call your breakdown service

Different providers offer various levels of cover, so it’s worth doing your research. The last thing you need is to find out you’re not covered by your insurer, for a particular reason.
