The London Philharmonic Orchestra's Debut Sounds - Sound in Motion

Published 18th June 2024

Taking place at the Southbank Centre’s Queen Elizabeth Hall on Thursday 27 June 2024, Debut Sounds is the annual showcase for new works created by London Philharmonic Orchestra’s incredible Young Composers.

Mentored by the LPO’s Composer-in-Residence – award-winning Cuban-American composer, Tania León – the LPO Young Composers programme aims to support the progression of talented orchestral composers. As part of this exciting journey, the young composers benefit hugely from Tania’s wealth of expertise and experience.
Spending a season with the LPO has also given the Young Composers unique opportunities to attend composer seminars and workshops. These workshops have allowed the Young Composers to experiment with their ideas, engage with the LPO musicians, and receive valuable guidance, feedback and insight. Throughout the year the composers have also had the chance to attend concerts, observe rehearsals, meet guest composers and get involved with the LPO’s wider education work.

LPO 2023/24 Young Composers and Choreographers, with Composer-in-Residence Tania León
Concluding the year, the Young Composers come together each with a new work for chamber orchestra. The works are performed by Foyle Future First musicians and LPO players at the Debut Sounds public showcase concert. We’re proud supporters of the Young Composers programme and the opportunities that are provided by the LPO to the musicians involved – so it’s very exciting to hear that this year the composers have created five thrilling new works for dance. The compositions will be presented and performed alongside pairs of postgraduate choreographers from Trinity Laban who have devised the motion that accompanies the sound.

To add to the impressive collective of emerging talent, the new works will be performed by an ensemble of musicians from the LPO Foyle Future Firsts Development Programme, alongside LPO players under the baton of the LPO’s 2023/24 Fellow Conductors, Luis Castillo-Briceño and Charlotte Politi.
